Kitchens don't get messy because people are messy. They get messy because things have no home — so everything's home becomes the counter. The fix is the same zone logic we use in garages, scaled to the busiest room in the house.
The Five Kitchen Zones
- Cooking zone — pots, pans, utensils and oils within one step of the stove.
- Prep zone — knives, boards and bowls at the biggest stretch of counter.
- Pantry zone — dry goods by category, in sealed containers, labeled, at grab height.
- Daily zone — the plates, glasses and mugs your family actually uses, in the easiest cabinet. Entertaining pieces go up high.
- Kid zone — snacks and their dishes where they can reach, so you stop being the fetch service.
Florida Pantry Rules
Humidity and pantry pests change the game here. Cardboard and open bags are how trouble starts: decant flour, sugar, rice, cereal and pet food into sealed containers, keep cardboard to a minimum, and check dates during the reset — expired goods are half the volume in most pantries we sort.
The One-Session Reset
DIY kitchen organization fails the same way garage cleanouts do: everything comes out, decisions stall, and dinner happens surrounded by piles. A two-person crew ends that: everything out, keep / donate / gone verdicts from you, duplicates and never-used gadgets donated with receipts, and the zones rebuilt before the crew leaves. One session, no week of chaos.
Sort Squad now runs kitchen sessions across South Florida — same crews, same system as our $699 garage day. Request one here.
